Why in some countries is Sex Work illegal?

In Australia prositution is legalised and there are government funded programs and Government funded std clinics that sex workers access.

I dont understand why it is illegal and that people's only understanding of the sex industry is girls in back alleys committing criminal acts. In Australia there are tax paying brothels, sex workers pay taxes and have right and resposibilities. Whats your view?
Edit to Nick: I disagree in Austraia and other countries there are services out there are screen, there are regulations where sex workers must have health checks and there are services like SWAP which offer information that help sex workers self determine, obtain health information etc. What you are saying is that Australia and other countries are diseased because the sex industry is legalised - what rubbish!!
Edit to Take me to your leader: Its just a nick name I am talking about regulation of a universal practice by impoverished women and men so that the act of sex work is decrimalised and that sexual diseases can be monitored with good policy and procedure and that the degrading of women when its illegal is not so prevalent - just because prosititution is illegal does not mean it does not occur with associated risks.
